Heronhill Close is one of Hawick’s newest housing developments, on the site of Heronhill House.

JT Rochead was commissioned by George Wilson to build this mansion to an Italianate design. During and after WWII it was used as a private girls school (which had moved from its previous base at St. Helen’s in Bridge of Allan). It also saw use by knitwear companies Anne Howard, Lyle and Scott and John Spencer, after modern extensions were added to the ground floor. 1

Along with the adjoining estate, Heronhill was purchased by the Town Council for new housing following WWII. Work began on Heronhill Crescent in 1948. Some of the Cruden homes were built in 1983. The mansion itself was in a poor condition and the upper floor was destroyed by fire long before its eventual demolition in 2005. Heronhill Gate Lodge still survives at 152 Weensland Road, being extended in the mid-20th century. This C-listed, Italianate building is notable for its prominent ornamental roof.
