What’s in a name? Northcote Street

    Tuesday, October 25th, 2016

Northcote Street is named after Sir Stafford Northcote (1818-1887), a prominent Conservative Statesman. During his lengthy political career, he served as Secretary to the Treasury, President of the Board of Trade, Secretary of State for India, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign Secretary, and Leader of the House of Commons.

The street was built in 1884, some 39 years after the housing in nearby North Bridge Street. The fact that it sits north of Dovecote Street is a happy coincidence! In the 1980s, Archie Aimers’ Joinery shed was demolished and replaced by the grassy area to the left of this photograph.
