    Out & About: The Black Quarries

    The Black Quarries lie behind the Target Hills and can be reached by foot from the Braid Road. By 1926, there were a remarkable 29 quarries in and around Hawick, employing 33 men at their peak. The Black Quarries were used to gather slate. Though over 90% of Europe’s natural roofing slate originates from Spain, most of Hawick’s older buildings used locally sourced materials.
